Into the Territory of Patagonia’s Elusive Predator
Few wildlife encounters are as captivating as spotting a puma in its natural habitat. As Patagonia’s apex predator, the puma plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of the ecosystem, yet its elusive nature makes every sighting a memorable experience.
At Awasi Patagonia, guests can venture into the lodge’s 7,000-acre Private Conservation Area alongside experienced trackers and their private guides, following the subtle signs of puma activity. From footprints and territorial markings to observations gathered through camera traps, each clue offers a glimpse into the behavior and movements of these remarkable animals. While sightings can never be guaranteed, the possibility of encountering one in the wild makes every outing an opportunity to discover more about Patagonia’s wildlife.
To enhance the experience, Awasi has recently expanded its wildlife-monitoring equipment with 20 new camera traps, two thermal binoculars and one thermal drone. These tools help the team monitor puma movements, identify areas of activity and locate animals more efficiently, while building a deeper understanding of their behavior and habitat. The additional technology also allows trackers to gather valuable information over time, helping them recognize patterns and make more informed decisions about where to focus their efforts.
Beyond the possibility of a sighting, puma tracking gives guests a closer look at the conservation work taking place across the reserve. By combining local expertise, ongoing wildlife monitoring and responsible observation, Awasi is helping protect one of Patagonia’s most fascinating inhabitants while giving guests a greater appreciation for the ecosystem it calls home.
