Our chef, Federico Ziegler, took to the skies above San Pedro de Atacama with local hot air balloon professionals, Balloons Over Atacama. Hot air balloons are not included among the private excursions offered at Awasi Atacama, however we can reserve the experience for our guests.
We asked Fedrico about the flight.
– How was the experience of flying high over the world’s driest desert?
It was a wonderful experience. The service provided by the company, Balloons over Atacama, is very good – they provide breakfast with fresh pastries at dawn and a glass of fizz when you land. The pilot was very professional, British, with 20 years’ experience flying all over the world.
– What did you think of the views and the landscapes from above?
We saw the sun rise up behind Volcano Licancabur, and had great views of Laguna Cejar and Tebinquinche. In the distance, we could see the Valley of the Moon and the town of San Pedro de Atacama.
– Since this experience is run by an independent company and is not part of the private excursions offered at Awasi (where each room has its own 4WD and private guide), were there many people on your trip?
If you opt for the Premium Service, there are a maximum of 8 people per hot air balloon.
– Do you have any recommendations for those interested in the experience?
Check the weather forecast before booking (the Awasi team can provide you with a detailed forecast) and aim for a clear, cloud-free day.
